![]() ![]() ![]() Lilac feels like she was originally Sonic. Carol is a Wildcat, like a green, female Miles Tails Power and, finally, Milla the Basset Hound is somewhere between Amy and Cream - each with their own play-style and special abilities. Back to the characters… Lilac was a Hedgehog originally but her design changed to a "Dragon " this mostly means a purple, female Sonic with two long tufts of hair. The gameplay is a whole different animal, but more on that later. The problem with this is that much of it still feels like a fan-game… but only in its art, design, and presentation. Freedom Planet feels like a glimpse into that world, the style, the writing, the designs, and the characters. There is a big fandom in a dark corner of the Internet, a place where Gantt charts of strange, furry, Sonic, and DeviantArt overlap. There are two protagonists to play through with that would seem very much at home besides Charmy and Espio, or Rouge and Cream.Īh yes, time to address the anthropomorphic elephant in the room. Instead, it's best to let the game shine where it counts: in the gameplay. The story throughout Adventure is humdrum, with some terrible writing. The Classic mode is the star of the show here. There's an Adventure mode, which blends story in with the stages, a Classic mode that gives the stages in the same manner as its inspiration, free of the tacked on story scenes, and a Time Attack mode that fits with the speed-running nature of the game. This game is probably great as long as you don't need to fight the bosses, but that's not this game. From the title menu, there are three modes to fire into. But death crawling your way through a boss fight, trying to learn their pattern gets old fast, and it made every level intimidating. ![]() Sure, there is a relatively loose lives system, where even if you "Game Over" you start at the latest checkpoint, which are pretty plentiful. Combined with the relatively long stages, these bosses made me just not want to play the game. It was these boss fights that wore me down. There is a fun combat system that allows some complexity, but the boss fights are just dodging until you wear them down. They act like Mega Man bosses (varied attacks with wind-ups you need to look out for) but I don't think they fit in a momentum based platformer as the inputs are not as precise. The actual stages aren't too bad until the last level, where the designers decide to be annoying. Then, the game decided that it needs to be difficult. There's a 2D stage you can use your powers to explore and maintaining momentum is shown to be extremely important. This game actually starts out as a lot of fun. It should be noted that I haven't played a 2D Sonic game, so This is an inexperienced player's opinion. I guess there's a story, but it felt like I missed things even though I was reading all the dialog, so I ended up ignoring it. Each character has special powers that allow them to get through the levels in different ways. This game features three characters, Lilac a fast dragon, Carol a cat like creature, and Mila who has a shield and does stuff. 50% Wii UFreedom Planet is an indie game based on fast platforming and maintaining momentum. ![]()
